Back-to-School Spirit

Our Boston office recently hosted a back-to-school donation drive to benefit The Home for Little Wanderers (“The Home”). We were inspired to organize the activity after representatives from The Home, including Development’s Rick Houpt, visited our office. We learned about how this 200-year-old nonprofit impacts the lives of 7,000 children each year through a network of services such as behavioral health, special education and adoption and foster care.

Together we exceeded our target donation goal and collected over 400 school supplies and 20 gift cards for The Home! It was a great demonstration of community spirit in support of a meaningful local cause.

In his thank-you email, Rick said: “We’re filled with gratitude for your efforts. The supplies will go directly to kids in need, and the gift cards will allow our clinicians to respond to last-minute supply needs as the school year kicks off. On behalf of the kids, we thank EVERYONE at OneBeacon for your generosity and commitment.”

Donations piled inside a spare cube included 15 backpacks, 75 folders, 68 notebooks, 54 glue sticks, 36 marker sets, 31 boxes of crayons, 22 rules, 23 colored pencil sets and much more.

Salem Stacks Peanut Butter to Fight Hunger

Our Salem, Va. team recently held its second annual summertime food drive to benefit Feeding America Southwest Virginia (FASWVA). During FASWVA’s “Peanut Butter from Heaven” initiative, the office teams up to collect jars of peanut butter. This protein-rich, shelf-stable food is then used to feed those in need.

This year they collected 272 jars, an increase of 55 jars compared to last year’s total. Bravo to Salem our teammates for donating 326 pounds – or one hearty portion – of peanut butter!

Taking Care of Our “Best Friends”

Many of us who have pets consider them part of our family, and it can be difficult to see when an animal is unwanted or abused. Recently the Farmington, CT office held a pet supply drive to benefit a local shelter. Generous donations of cat and dog food, gently used blankets and towels, toys and medications were donated to The Little Guild. The Little Guild of Saint Francis for the Welfare of Animals, Inc. is the only no-kill shelter in Northwest Connecticut. Their mission is to save unwanted, abused and neglected cats and dogs; provide medical care and enrichment to make them more adoptable; and, through its pet adoption center, match them with homes where they can thrive. The current facility accommodates 20 dogs and 40 cats at any time. Thanks to the generosity of our employees, the shelter animals will be a little more comfortable until they find their forever home.

Alumni Reunion – In and Out of the Office!

The University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn. boasts a student population representing nearly 60 countries. Well within our Plymouth office you only need to walk down the hall to find UST alumni, who are well-represented in various groups, particularly Finance and Actuarial. However, our colleagues don’t just share an alma mater. This group strongly believes in giving back to their school through occasional internship and mentoring roles at OneBeacon, on-campus networking and education, and supporting UST financially.

Recently, a team participated in the annual alumni golf tournament hosted at the Edinburgh USA golf course in Brooklyn Park, Minn. OneBeacon could be seen both on the course and at the volunteer tables. And the OneBeacon Charitable Trust was there to provide support as well.

Community-minded both regarding where they’ve been and where they are; we like that spirit!

Scoring for Charity at Annual Soccer Tournament

Last weekend, Team OneBeacon laced up its cleats to participate in the  SCORES Cup charity soccer tournament held at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. This is the third consecutive year we’ve entered a team in the tournament thanks to a generous sponsorship from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust.

This year’s event drew 40 teams from Boston-area companies and raised over $300,000 for America SCORES Boston. This local nonprofit provides soccer, enrichment and community engagement activities to more than 1,400 inner-city Boston youth.

Although they didn’t take the Cup, the team enjoyed a fun day outside with colleagues and friends. A few OneBeacon employees even showed up to cheer our team on from the stands!

Members of OneBeacon’s IT, Operations and Marketing & Communications groups were part of our team.

Plymouth Helps Feed Needy Kids

Last week, over 50 of our Plymouth teammates spent Tuesday afternoon volunteering at Feed My Starving Children in nearby Chanhassen, MN.  Founded in 1987, this organization hand-packs meals specially formulated for malnourished children, which are shipped to their partners around the world including orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs.

During their two-hour shift, the group packed food for shipment to needy children in Nicaragua. In total, 129 boxes of food, or 27,864 meals, which is enough to feed 76 children for a full year was packed! They also presented a $2,500 donation on behalf of the group funded by the OneBeacon Charitable Trust.  Way to Go team Plymouth!

Leaning In for a Cause

On May 20, members of our Technology Insurance team were proud to attend the East Los Angeles Women’s Center’s 40th Anniversary Awards Celebration. They joined 400+ attendees to honor and celebrate those that have ensured a safe haven for abused women. The East LA Women’s Center also provides women and their families with access to health services and social support, with an emphasis on the local Latino community.

For the past several years, our West Coast Technology team has joined with other industry colleagues to support this nonprofit.  The OneBeacon Charitable Trust has also been proud to sponsor the Center. With advocates like OneBeacon’s Beth Lopez, Maria De La Torre, Elizabeth Marazzo, Michelle Stream and Ana Ochoa, we are confident the Center will continue to succeed at empowering their less-fortunate neighbors during their times of need.EastLA

Canton Rallies for Industry Charity

For the third consecutive year, members of our Canton office held a fundraiser raffle event to benefit the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF). Participants entered for a chance to win creatively themed gift baskets displayed in the atrium of their office.

In total the event raised over $1,500 in ticket sales. And with a full donation match from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust, we are donating a grand total of $3,000 to the IICF!

In the three years they’ve hosted this event, the Canton office (along with support from our Charitable Trust) has raised over $10,000 for the IICF! We are pleased to support this nonprofit, which coordinates our industry’s efforts to give back through volunteering efforts and grants.
