Salem’s Charitable Campaign

In the last few months, many have experienced catastrophic disasters leaving devastating loss.  Through employee participation and donations, our Salem office hosted multiple fundraising events to help victims rebuild. Not only did employees feel good about contributing to a worthy cause, but they had a fun with their charitable efforts!

To kick it off, the office held a bake sale where employees donated a variety of baked goods for purchase. Additionally, they held a 50/50 raffle and raffled off a fall basket containing mums, candy, seasonal knickknacks and gift cards donated by employees. Jan Newey was the lucky winner! Throughout the series of events, the different departments in the office held a loose change contest. Whichever team collected the most change won—IT vs. Operations, Data Management and Enterprise Underwriting. Operations, Data Management and Enterprise Underwriting was the winning team! To wrap up their charitable efforts, the group held a silent auction of baked goods.

Overall, the group raised $2,228.35 for the Red Cross Relief Fund. Great job Salem!

A Hole in One for Charity

In support of our producer partner Barney & Barney, several members from our International Marine Underwriters and Specialty Property teams participated in the 6th Annual Bay Area Barney & Barney Foundation Golf Tournament in Orinda, CA on October 30. With support from the Charitable Trust, OneBeacon was pleased to be a luncheon sponsor for this year’s event.

The Barney & Barney Foundation was able to raise and donate $25,000 to YES Nature to Neighborhoods which grants youth and family access to outdoor activities. In addition, another $50,000 was donated to George Mark Children’s House, a transitional care facility for children who no longer need to be hospitalized but cannot yet be cared for at home.

Although our team didn’t win the tournament, we had a great time on the course supporting an excellent cause!

Chop chop, Boston!

During the week of October 14, the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation (IICF) held its annual Week of Giving, an industry-wide volunteer initiative where insurance professionals come together to service their communities and neighborhoods by volunteering. Each fall, OneBeacon always looks forward to participating in IICF’s week-long event.

To celebrate this charitable week, members of our Boston office volunteered in the kitchen at the Pine Street Inn. Pine Street Inn is a local homeless shelter that provides services to support those in need. OneBeacon has always been a big supporter of Pine Street Inn, as we try to volunteer multiple times a year and donate through way of our Charitable Trust.

The group began their morning by chopping, cutting, peeling and dicing. Who needs coffee when you have the scent of onions to wake you up! They chopped nothing but onions this time around, but the chefs told them it was the most important task in the kitchen—onions are the base for almost every meal!

The group had a great time. They helped prep meals for over 2,000 people in need throughout the city of Boston and its surrounding communities. Way to go!

Canton’s Winter Warmth Drive

Earlier this month, our Canton office held a Winter Warmth Drive where employees donated various winter clothing items. Much needed items included: coats, sweaters, gloves, neck warmers, scarves, hats, socks, etc. The drive ran through One Warm Coat, a national non-profit organization that works to provide a warm coat to any person in need, while all the proceeds went to Bay Cove Human Services in Boston.

Canton’s results were outstanding! They collected a total of 133 items:

  • 36 winter coats
  • 55 lightweight coats (fleece, sweatshirts, sweaters)
  • 19 pairs of heavy socks
  • 17 scarves
  • 5 pairs of gloves/mittens
  • 1 comforter

A job well done, Canton!

All of the donated items!

Plymouth Runs for Twin Cities in Motion

At the end of September, members of our Plymouth, MN office participated in a 5K Run/Walk together for Twin Cities in Motion (TCM). Twin Cities in Motion is a nonprofit focusing its resources on creating healthy lifestyles for youth through various exercise events and activities. A portion of each racer’s entry fee, along with a $1,500 donation from the Trust supported this great organization.

This year, the team placed 5th in the Corporate Team Challenge for fastest 5K team! Overall, 23 teams participated in the event. They improved from last year’s results of 16th place with a time of 2:17:36, to a time of 1:59:19! All smiles for team OneBeacon, as it was a beautiful morning for a 5K!

Game On: Team Boston!

The Greater Boston OneBeacon team recently joined 200+ industry colleagues at the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s (IICF) annual ping-pong tournament. This event is one of two IICF Boston fundraisers in support of grants to local nonprofits. Team OneBeacon was proud to finish the evening undefeated and greatly enjoyed the friendly—but competitive—matches throughout the event. More importantly, the team was happy to help support local charitable organizations along with many industry colleagues.

Celebrating a winning evening for a great cause!

Denver Office Hosts Drive for Hurricane Harvey

Earlier this month, our Denver office joined together and hosted a clothing drive for those affected by Hurricane Harvey. Employees were very generous with their donations and the amount of support was wonderful. The donations were dropped off at a local Colorado Red Cross office and shipped to Houston for distribution. Read more on Denver’s hurricane relief efforts and how you can help. Truly a job well done!

It’s That Time…Back to School!

Summer is coming to an end, which means it’s that time of year again…back to school! The Overland Park, KS office which includes members from Entertainment, Technology, Specialty Property and Inland Marine, all collected school supplies to donate to The Rose Brooks Center in Kansas City.  Rose Brooks Center is a shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence.  The center houses about 40 children and is always in need for school supplies.  The office collected a variety of supplies for children of all ages—from infant to high school age.  They hosted a “Back to School” day for the kids to pick out their supplies and the kids were very excited to see everything that was donated!

Additionally, our Farmington office also held a school supply drive. This was the office’s second year participating, and all of their drive benefits went to the Wheeler Clinic’s Community Support for Families. The Wheeler Clinic is a program designed to help families strengthen natural and community support systems to maintain a safe and health home environment.

From pencils to backpacks and notebooks to markers, both offices were successful in their collecting efforts. Great job teams!

Charitable Trust Donates to Hurricane Harvey Support

This week, we’ve watched Hurricane Harvey severely impact Houston and surrounding areas. Consistent with our commitment to “doing the right thing,” we will be making a $10,000 donation to the American Red Cross’ Harvey Relief fund through the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. The donation will be made on behalf of all OneBeacon employees.

We’ve also heard that some offices are collecting items for Houston families and direct donations have likely happened as well. Please know that we applaud your efforts and offer this contribution to complement your spirit of community giving.

Plymouth Helps Kids in Need

Last week, over 50 of our Plymouth teammates spent their afternoon volunteering at Feed My Starving Children in nearby Chanhassen, MN.  Founded in 1987, this organization hand-packs meals specially formulated for malnourished children, which are shipped to their partners around the world including orphanages, schools, clinics and feeding programs.

During their two-hour shift, the group packed food for shipment to needy children in the Dominican Republic. In total, 139 boxes of food, or 30,024 meals, which is enough to feed 82 children for a full year was packed! They also presented a $2,500 donation on behalf of the group funded by the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. The $2,500 covers costs to feed 12 children for a full year!

In addition to their meal packing efforts, the Plymouth office also conducted a school supply drive. Over 150 supplies were collected and donated to the Minneapolis schools. All kinds of materials were donated—from binders and folders, to pencils and markers. Way to go team Plymouth!
