Help Us Give Back This Holiday Season

We’re helping spread the joy by giving back to those in need this holiday season. Our Charitable Trust will allocate a $10,000 gift among three worthy nonprofits including Feeding America, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and Habitat for Humanity. To help us allocate this year’s donation, please view our holiday card and select one of these organizations.

We’ll post the results right here in a few weeks! In the meantime, we hope you enjoy a wonderful holiday season.

The Gift of Giving

The holiday season is in full swing in the Twin Cities, with our Plymouth, Minn. team joining the local community in collecting Toys for Tots. Our colleagues collected nearly 200 toys, along with a donation from OneBeacon’s Charitable Trust. This generous presentation even made the local TV news!

Sunshine and Tee-Times to Support Local Families

Fortunately, it never rains in California, which means their outdoor charitable fundraisers always draw a crowd. Our Orange County-based partners from Barney and Barney recently hosted their fifth annual Golf Classic, which benefited the Assistance League of Santa Ana and Mariposa Women & Family Center. Golfers from across Southern California came out to support and raise money for both organizations.

OneBeacon was well represented through seven West Coast employees from IMU and OneBeacon Technology. Our team volunteered throughout the day, working a hospitality tent on the 11th tee.  Additionally, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust sponsored the event lunch as noted on the signage below.

Let’s “Can” Hunger!

Our San Antonio-based Government Risks team held a food drive throughout the month of November to benefit the San Antonio Food Bank. This organization helps combat hunger in 16 local Texas communities.

In addition to monetary donations, employees contributed items listed on the Food Bank’s “12 Most-Wanted List.” A few of the themed-giving days like “Macaroni Monday” and “Tuna Tuesday” prompted an outpouring of giving from employees.

At the official weigh-in, we were thrilled to discover we had collected 595 pounds of much needed food for our community. It was an honor to do our small part to help feed our hungry neighbors.

A Thankful Food Drive

The Farmington, CT office recently held a fun and competitive food drive to support FoodShare. FoodShare is an organization that helps feed more than 137,000 people in Hartford and Tolland counties. Employees were invited, either individually or as a team, to decorate a work station with reasons why they are thankful. Then, their office mates had an opportunity to tour the decorated areas and vote which work station represented giving thanks most effectively by placing nonperishable food items in those stations. The reasons were vast and included some humorous reasons, as well as simple yet profound notes of gratitude. Once the food was tallied, well over 300 items were donated, and the office celebrated with a pot luck lunch. It was a great way to kick off the season of giving!

 

No Tricks and All Treats for the Troops

Whether it was due to generous neighbors who enjoy tick-or-treaters, or there were simply too many leftovers to eat, the Farmington and Canton offices were on candy overload after Halloween. Instead of sharing bowls with co-workers or throwing it out, the groups decided to donate leftover Halloween candy in support of Operation Gratitude. Operation Gratitude annually sends 200,000+ care packages to veterans, first responders, new recruits, wounded heroes and their care givers, and to individually named U.S. service members deployed overseas and their families waiting at home.

Both offices donated several pounds of candy, and the Canton office plans to hold a contest to see if anyone can guess the weight of what was donated.

Hitting the Links to Help Fight Poverty

We are always pleased to support those causes that matter to our agency partners. Through the OneBeacon Charitable Trust, our Surety Group recently sponsored a hole at a charity golf tournament to benefit Part of the Solution. Our agency partners from Alliant’s New Jersey offices are very involved with this Bronx-based organization, which focuses on fighting hunger and poverty in the local community. We are happy to see our partners enjoying a day on the golf course for a good cause!

A Little Fall Refresh

The OneBeacon Architects & Engineers team recently participated in its  annual volunteer day at South Park Inn’s Plimpton House in Hartford, CT. This group has volunteered together for the past six years, with the last four at this facility.  South Park Inn’s mission is to assist homeless people to improve their life situation by providing temporary and long-term housing and supportive services. In addition, South Park Inn advocates for solutions to homelessness.  For those with severe limitations and who need ongoing support, Plimpton House was opened in 1995. This program provides a permanent housing option for 35 women and men who benefit from in-house support services. The Architects &Engineers team spent the day cleaning and painting the front and side porch of this historical Hartford building.

Lending a Hand with Industry Mates

Each fall we look forward to participating in the Insurance Industry Charitable Foundation’s Week of Giving (WoG).  This October, members of our Boston and Canton offices teamed up with local industry colleagues to volunteer at the Pine Street Inn. They weren’t afraid to get their hands a little dirty for a good cause, chopping and preparing 10 different types of food. Each morsel matters, as the Pine Street Inn is tasked with preparing roughly 2,000 meals each day to feed homeless individuals.

Our Denver office also participated in the WoG activities by hosting a food drive at their office. They collected many non-perishable items to benefit the Denver Rescue Mission, a nonprofit that provides food, shelter, clothing and education.

Ping-Pong Fever Hits Mile-High City

Ping-pong match-time recently hit downtown Denver, courtesy of OneBeacon agency partner, the IMA Financial Group. Through their charitable foundation, IMA once again hosted its “Ping Pong on the Plaza” fundraiser. In its ninth year, this event raised over $100k for the IMA Foundation, which generously gives back to the local community.

On September 14, OneBeacon’s “Team Lobsta”  including Environmental’s Nick Ryan and Matt Dunham, and IMU’s Kele Yake and Tyler Van Spanje dressed in red shirts for the afternoon tournament. The group proved very competitive, rising out of the pool of 50 teams into the final 8 before being eliminated. The “Lobstas” may have only made it to the quarterfinals, but we think they’re real winners for supporting this great event alongside industry friends and colleagues.
