The Toys Are Piling High In Denver!

From what we’re hearing, the holidays have  brought out the best in OneBeacon’s employees. We have received updates from several offices describing local generosity targeting those in need. Keep an eye out for new blog posts over the next few days, and if you have a holiday-giving story to share, please let us know.

Toys for Tots Results in Denver

Denver: Our friends in the Mile-High City organized a toy drive for Toys for Tots. If you’re not familiar with this group, the U.S. Marine’s Toys for Tots Foundation supplies toys to children in need throughout the country. Their goal is to encourage kids through this tangible message of hope during the holidays. The Denver team filled two boxes of new toys to be donated today, Monday, December 20. Thank you, Denver, for helping brighten the holidays for some very special children!

Make a Child’s Wish Come True

That’s what Randy Werner, from the A&H team, works hard to make happen. Randy has just wrapped up his third year serving on the Make a Wish of Northeast Ohio Regional Board (and second year as Board Chairman!). This group funds over 100 grants annually to help local children suffering from life-threatening illnesses savor one very special wish. The Trust recently supported Randy’s volunteerism and philanthropy with a $1,500 donation. We hope this helps another child enjoy a special moment. Kudos to Randy and the Northeast Ohio Make a Wish team!

AutoOne Helps Its Neighbors All Year Long

We received a nice note from our colleagues at AutoOne describing how the Trust supports their team’s community giving efforts. Thanks to Stephanie Cruz for submitting this post!

“The OneBeacon Charitable Trust has continually supported the nonprofit organizations the AutoOne business unit has raised funds for. Each of our team donations was matched this year, doubling the total contributions! The Trust makes our personal efforts have even more of an impact in our communities.

Currently, AutoOne is hosting a food drive for Island Harvest and Food Bank of Central New York. The drive runs through December 10, and already 450 non-perishable items have been collected! As part of the annual holiday donation program, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust will be donating $5,000 to be shared by both organizations.

Overall, the Trust has contributed over $10,000 toward our sponsored charities this year. These charitable organizations include American Red Cross, Audubon Society Wildlife, American Cancer Society, American Heart Association and the Make-A-Wish Foundation.”

Way to Give, AutoOne!

Wondering how we process requests?

Just in case you’re wondering how we consider the many requests we see from employees and agents/brokers — the Trust Committee meets biweekly to consider all requests over $500. All sponsorship requests go to our Tax department for review first and then we discuss them in our next meeting.  We meet on Thursdays; our next session scheduled for December 9.  All pending requests are discussed and unless further information is necessary, we decide right there and let you know the outcome  immediately.

I’m pleased to say that the vast majority of requests are honored; only occasionally do we receive an inquiry for an organization that isn’t an IRS qualified nonprofit.

Requests under $500 simply require the approval of the department manager and just one Trust representative. Let us know if you have any questions on process!

Over 2,000 Thanksgiving Dinners

We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends. Like you, we spent the day cooking, watching football and anticipating our turkey dinner. Well, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust wasn’t left behind! Recently, BTS’ Joe Topale requested Trust sponsorship for Personal Best’s fund-raising road race. Proceeds were used to help provide Thanksgiving meals to over 2,000 southeastern Massaschusetts families. This was the 15th year of the annual Turkey Brigade and the Trust has supported Joe and his family’s efforts for the past two. Way to give, Joe!

Way to Give, Denver!

A shout-out to the entire Denver  office for  their  support of the Food Bank of the Rockies! Besides collecting food, members of the local  Claims team spent 3 ½ hours packing food pallets for area schools serving low income families. These children receive free meals at school  during the week, but many have little to eat at home. The schools distribute the donated food through the kids’ backpacks, which they take home to eat over the weekend.  A great team effort to help those in need!

Agents & Brokers Work Hard After Hours, Too.

Day-to-day, we see our distribution partners’ business side, as they work hard to manage their clients’ risk exposures. What you may not realize is how many of them work just as hard as volunteers and fund raisers for worthy nonprofits.

Here are just a few recent examples: Willis’ national life science practice partner rode 500 miles in support of the Arthritis Foundation; AON Mass. supported a fund-raising evening and silent auction benefiting the Kristin Foundation, which funds and organizes cancer-support events (e.g., blood, platelet and bone marrow donor-registration drives); and a principal from Heffernan Insurance cycled the Pacific Coast in the Best Buddies charity ride.

Each of these required the same determination and focus we see during our business interactions, but offered in goodwill and after hours in support of worthy causes. In each case, the OneBeacon Charitable Trust was tapped to support our partners’ community giving. Know of an event your agent or broker is participating in? Contact John Scroope to see if the Trust can help in any way!

The Trust at Work

Some of you may be wondering how the OneBeacon Charitable Trust actually works. First, Trust sponsorships must support IRS-qualified nonprofits known as “501(c)(3)” organizations. Each sponsorship request is considered relative to our community giving guidelines  The Trust supports those nonprofits that OneBeacon employees or our distribution partners support through volunteerism or personal donations.  Additionally, the Trust matches 50 cents to every dollar you donate through the annual United Way campaign, sponsors the OneBeacon Scholarship Program and funds the college matching gift program.

If you would like to submit a request for sponsorship, simply complete the forms posted on the Employee Portal and email them to

Helping Fight Hunger in Virginia

Late summer, our Salem colleagues chipped in to support Feeding America Southwest Virginia by providing the food bank with the most frequently requested staple– 347 jars of peanut butter! The team also hosted a peanut butter themed cook-off where the Operations department took top honors with a peanut butter pie. A cash donation and support from the Trust rounded out this helpful donation to a needy agency.

Kudos to the Salem team!
