Networking for a Cause

Most of us are familiar with the importance of professional networking. But back in 2009, a group of New England insurance women felt they could use their industry connections to support those in need. They decided to host a golf outing to support a local charity, an event that laid the foundation for Women in Insurance in New England, or W.I.N.E.

The group now boasts hundreds of area supporters including IMU’s Meredith Atwood and OneBeacon Technology’s Kathleen Gonzales, who have participated for several years. The showcase fundraiser is the fall “Nine and W.I.N.E.” where a friendly nine holes of golf are played, followed by a group dinner featuring a plentiful raffle to raise additional funds. As well, all participants are encouraged to bring supplies that will be donated to the group’s beneficiary, The Women’s Lunch Place (WLP) located in Boston. WLP provides a safe, comfortable daytime shelter, nutritious food and support services for women experiencing homelessness or poverty.

Over the years, the group has raised over $100,000 for the WLP, including support from the OneBeacon Charitable Trust. We applaud Meredith and Kathleen’s commitment to this cause and for joining with industry colleagues to support those in need. Now that’s networking!
